When John Strnad was a young boy in grade school during the late 1960s, his teenage brother Frank had enlisted in the U.S. Marines at the age of 17. Frank returned home on leave for a period of time, and his curious little brother began to search through Frank’s duffle bag. John thought he had found some small firecrackers and took them from the duffle bag to fire off without Frank knowing.
