Before the Ice Bucket Challenge went viral on social media in the summer of 2014, many people had little awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

ALS is a neural disease that slowly kills the neurons that control a person’s voluntary movements. Scientists have not been able to determine what causes it. Some people, like the physicist Stephen Hawking, are able to live with it longer than others, but the disease is 100 percent fatal.
